Jack Meyerwitz (Michael C. Hall), the responsible son, Cheri (Sarah Silverman) a would-be actress and singer-songwriter, Nathan (Ben Schwartz), a successful writer, and Joel (Rainn Wilson), the black sheep of the family who is constantly in legal trouble, come together to celebrate their father (Ron Rifkin)'s 70th birthday. This is following the publication of Nathan's debut, which exposes the family's most intimate secrets. The four must come to terms with their dislike of each other for their father's sake and for the sake of getting on with their lives. The film focuses on the day leading up to the dinner, including Nathan's struggles with premature ejaculation, Jack's marital problems, and Joel's varied misfortunes with money.
