Bethany Hamilton is a teenager who lives in Kauai, Hawaii with her parents Tom and Cheri, and two older brothers. All the surfers are, but Bethany and her best friend Alana Blanchard, a greater love for the sport and the competition for entertainment. Bethany Church Youth Ministry Director, Sarah Hill, was disappointed when Bethany is scheduled to cancel the trip because of the competition.
Bethany and Alana place first and third respectively, while the second place winner, Malina Birch, shows a fierce rival in Bethany. Bethany has invited the girls to box the winner with her, but refuses to reluctantly Malina. Rip Curl surfwear company offers to sponsor the competition Bethany and Alana in exchange for an advertising contract.
One night before Halloween, Alana and Bethany with his friends to go night surfing. Later, while Tom goes to the hospital for knee surgery, the father of two girls surf Alana and her brother. Bethany hung from his left arm in the water, a shark bites the arm near the shoulder.
Alana's father out of the water and put a tourniquet around Bethany, while Alana's brother called 9-1-1. An ambulance meet them on their way to the hospital. Just before surgery, Tom, Dr. Rovinsky IS called to meet Bethany. She lost her left arm, with 60% of blood volume, and Dr. Rovinsky calls his survival a miracle.
