A man (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in a train sitting in front of a woman named Christina Warren (Michelle Monaghan). The woman seems to know him by name Sean Fentress, but it does not seem to know and seems sure of his identity. After eight minutes, a bomb exploded on the train and the man awakes to find himself strapped into a small geodesic dome. There, Air Force Captain Colleen Goodwin (Vera Farmiga) explains to him through a computer screen that he did Colter Stevens, a decorated Army helicopter pilot who is now on a mission to find the manufacturer of a bomb that destroyed a train in Chicago. This must be done using the source code, a program of time loop that allows it to take over someone else body in a reconstruction of their last eight minutes of life.
Stevens is not the memory of how he became involved in the project's source code, his last memory is of flying recently in Afghanistan, taking enemy fire. Source Code Operation Stevens is to assume the identity of Fentress, a passenger train, look for the bomb, find the one that blew, and to report on Goodwin to prevent a bomber from blowing up more nuclear dirty bomb in Chicago, which can cause death to millions of people. Goodwin and creator of the source, Dr. Rutledge (Jeffrey Wright), saying that the source code is not a simulation, but the visit was in the past, in the form of an alternate reality. He said he can not really change the past to save a passenger, but must collect the Intel processor that can be modified in the future, and to prevent future attacks.
